Bayati
The most commonly used maqam in Quranic recitation. Creates a reflective, contemplative atmosphere with its distinctive half-flat second degree.

Hijaz
Known for its exotic, dramatic sound. The augmented second interval gives Hijaz its immediately recognizable character.

Saba
The most emotionally intense maqam. Saba evokes deep sadness and spiritual yearning.

Rast
The foundational maqam. Rast has a balanced, noble quality that works for any context.

Nahawand
Similar to the Western minor scale. Nahawand has a sweet, gentle quality beloved by reciters.
Common usage: Gentle passages, stories of mercy, night recitation
Ajam
The brightest maqam, similar to the major scale. Ajam conveys joy, triumph, and celebration.
Common usage: Joyful passages, paradise descriptions, closings
Sikah
A distinctive, mystical-sounding maqam with a unique tonal center. Creates an otherworldly atmosphere.
